Story

Divine G, imprisoned in Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by performing in a theater group with other incarcerated men in this story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art. At the beginning of the film, the cast rehearses for various roles in the play.

The group has been criticized for not doing comedy, but their previous comedy was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which is a comedy. Appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers: Anna Faris/Colman Domingo/Jose Mendeleez (2024).

A great film all around

It captures the right tone and rhythm between harsh reality and the human potential for good. There’s very little that could be improved in this film.

Everything seen in the film is well-crafted

The script, cinematography, and acting support the story very well. The only reason I don’t give it a 10 is that I don’t have first-hand experience with prisons and can’t attest to its accuracy in terms of life there.

Watch it if you’re interested in prisons, the justice system, rehabilitation, or theater

It’s also an important film because it shows the consequences of bad parole boards and the injustice of sentencing.
