Story
After 20 years, Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca, where he finds his wife held captive by pretenders vying for the throne and his son facing death at their hands. Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche’s third film together, having previously worked together on The English Patient and Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.
Odysseus: For some, war becomes home
Penelope: How can men find their way to war but not their way back? Focused on immersing the viewer in the multi-factorial pain and suffering of Penelope and Odysseus as Odysseus returns to Ithaca, this treatise seemed to explore in a fairly systematic way the challenges many soldiers face upon returning from active service, including PTSD and other issues.
mental health, reintegration into one’s former life with family and society, and flashbacks of memories and pain suffered and inflicted, and the irreversible internal change that results
The Return is fueled by a great casting choice to allow the viewer to experience this roller coaster ride that the two main protagonists ride to significant heights, the latter thanks to the unique and particular resilience of Penelope and Odysseus during this difficult time in their lives, and without the support of each other. In fact, the two are quite separated for much of the lead-up, which only makes the catharsis more powerful in the most intense, suspenseful, and slow-burning part of the film.
It’s a great and very relevant work that you have to try!
Fiennes brings to this work his unique style of depicting suffering – a great extension of his wonderful skills from his adjacent depictions of pain and anguish in Spider-Man and The End of the Affair. Binoche is the perfect choice for Penelope, as the viewer can be led to feel and hope that the two will reunite in the same way they were close during The English Patient, and Pasolini exploits this to create an added tension in this work for those whose memories of The English Patient are vivid.
